Proximal Femur Strength and Fracture

At the Cleveland Clinic Learner Building, some Academy students attended a lecture from Dr. Keyak on bone strength and fracture modeling. Dr. Keyak presented a model of femur fractures due to load events. The model was based on a Finite Element Model developed from a CT scan of the subject. Sample fracture testing of human femurs was used to validate the model, with stresses charted over the model femur that localized the likely fracture point to the neck of the femur after loading on the greater trochanter from two differently oriented falls, a posterior-lateral fall and a lateral fall. Her model took physical parameters and then applied forces to a modeled femur with statistical distributions of load events.
