Engine Component Research Lab

July 6, 2007

The NASA Glenn Academy was given their own private tour of the Engine Component Research Lab at NASA Glenn. There were two pieces of equipment being tested; both were for U.S. Army purposes. First, there was an apache helicopter engine in a wind tunnel, where air was passed over the compressor blades. The goal was to prevent stall at the tip of the blades.

The second set up was a small off-the-shelf model engine that could be used for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The engine was tested using a more economic, efficient fuel and its performance was analyzed. The Academy was also shown the control room; the walls were covered with switches, monitors, and circuitry.
