While at Johnson Space Center, the Academy went a little off campus to Ellington field to take a peek at the astronauts’ T-38s and the goofy-looking Super-guppy. Our tour guides gave us very complete histories of the jets.
They also explained the pros of keeping the older jets and paying for upkeep as opposed to buying new jets, the main pro being cost. After being “donated” to NASA by the military, only two of the jets have been lost in crashes. The Super Guppy was wickedly awesome but I refuse to believe it can fly until I see it with my own eyes.
